I started race-walking half way through the outdoor track season of my sophomore year of 2015. I learned the technique from a race-walker at my school, and I picked it up rather quickly. I started out around a 10:30 at my first meet sophomore year. I had absolutely no idea how to pace myself for a mile of walking, and my coach had no race-walking experience. By the end of the season, I placed fifth at the Class A State Meet with a time of around 8:51.
My first meet this 2016 season, I won with a time of 9:28.91 after nursing an injury over the winter indoor season. I ended up with the new school record of 8:47.32 after my last regular season meet. After placing third at the Class A State Meet 2016 with a new personal record of 8:24.34, I found out that I had qualified for the New Balance Outdoor National Meet. The experience was priceless, and I feel honored to have been part of such an amazing event.
*I have no race-walk coach, and there has been no one to correct/advance my technique during practices.
As an honors student and a three-season athlete, I have loved running cross country/track for as long as I can remember, and I have run for the Brewer programs for five years now. After attending Stowe Running Camp in Vermont over the summer of 2015, I ran the best cross country season of my high school career, maintaining my position as the top runner for my school’s girls-team, and running a new course record at the Hamden Academy course with a time of 21:33. It is my goal to attend a college that will allow me to run cross country and continue race-walking competitively.
