I am Mizan Thomas, a class of 2018!student athlete at Detroit Renaissance High School. I have been playing sports since I was in the third grade starting with flag football at Joseph Keels Elementary, in Columbia, South Carolina. I participated in gymnastics during 5th and 6th grade with the Livonia YMCA, competing at the national level my second year. 6th grade I began playing volleyball and have been playing ever since. My 11th grade varsity season was the most successful season we've had in Renaissance history with 50+ wins, 3 ties, and 4 losses. Setting the bar high and making it all the way to regionals for the first time in years. I began running track my freshman year and instantly fell in love. Though my season was short lived due to fracturing my second metatarsal in my left foot, I did not let that stop me. The indoor season of 2015-16 was my first full track season. I ran under Coach Harry Weaver of Detroit Cheetah Track Club. At the MITS Indoor State meet I ran the 60m dash placing 6th in the state with a PR of 7.92. I also ran the first 200m leg of the SMR and anchor on the 4x200. That following high school season I won the titles of 100m and 400m city champion with PR times of 12.60 and 62.18. That same season, I ran the anchor leg on our 4x200m relay earning us 9th place. The 2016-17 indoor season I ran a season PR in the 60m dash of 7.70 and at the MITS Indoor State meet I placed 7th in the 60 and ran the same two legs on the same relays from the previous indoor season this time medaling in both taking 8th place in the 4x200 and 6th in the SMR. This past 2017 high school season has by far been the highlight but definitely not the peak of my track and field career. this season I held more of a leadership position on the team keeping them focused and working hard to our common goal which we achieved for the first time in years, winning the City Championship. It was not easy but with the help of our coaches Calvin Johnson and Darnell Hall, former olympian, and a strong dedicated team full of hardworking athletes, we did it. This season I tried my hand at high jump earning me the title of The Detroit PSL GIRL's High Jump Champion with a height of 4'10. I also maintained my title of Girls 100m dash running a time of 12.46 which had been my PR. Taking it a step further I qualified in 4 events at regionals for the state meet. I ran the 100m dash at the state meet PR'ing with a time of 12.26. Our girls 4x200m of which I ran the second leg relay ran its fastest time of the season awarding us 8th place with a time of 1:43:03. Our 4x100m relay, which I ran the anchor leg, made some major achievements with a time of 47.48 placing 2nd in the state, breaking the school record, and running the 6th fastest time in Michigan High school history. Lastly was our 4x400m relay, which I ran the second leg, bested our previous time by 8 seconds coming in tenth place with a time of 3:59:53. While training and competing kept me busy, my grades still came first. I have been an honor roll student since the third grade and been loved by most all my teachers. My current overall GPA is a 3.97 and my Academic GPA is a 4.03. I plan to pursue a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and also continue my track career at the college level. I am intelligent, hard working, dedicated, and a leader and I believe these characteristics will make me a great addition to any college track team.
