Hi, my name is Kyla Meyers. I have always loved running. I love the feeling of freedom in running, and that is why I joined my high school's track team in 10th grade. In my very first practice, I trained with the varsity XC runners. I am not going to lie, at first it was pretty rough. However, I still tried to keep up with them knowing that if I tried to keep up with them, eventually I would be running with them. A couple of weeks into the season, I was keeping up with our fastest varsity runners at practice. A couple more weeks and I had become the team's fastest female 800-meter runner. This season I am now ranked top 16 in the state as of May 1, 2023 in the 800 with a 2:18.05 time. I am a dedicated runner, and I believe that if I am given the opportunity to train with next-level athletes, I will be able to become a next-level runner in the same way that I worked my way onto the varsity team with the help of my teammates and my determination. However, unlike college running, high school track season only lasts about 3.5 months, and then I swim for the rest of the year, which makes me wonder how far I could go training for track and cross country year-round with next-level collegiate athletes and coaches.
Academically, I don't struggle with learning. I have always had all A's. However, I believe that what puts me at the top of my class is how I learn. I don't believe in taking in information and regurgitating it. I always try to understand what I'm learning so that I can apply the wide variety of information I receive in the 7 hours I'm stuck in a rectangular building to life outside of it, or to other courses I take. I want to know what I'm learning and how it affects my life, and why it affects me. This can be seen in how I think as an athlete too: as a swimmer, I am always focused on technique and how different things help move me forward more efficiently. Technique is also something I focus on in running – I want to know what I can do to move forward faster and how that helps me move forward. I need to understand these techniques, and that’s what I look to my coaches for. I always look to my coaches for advice and I take any that is given, making me a very coachable athlete. All in all, I want to run in college because I want to be able to take my running to the next level, train with next-level athletes and coaches, and ultimately to become a next-level champion.
