Hi, my name is Lexi Maddux. I am currently a Junior at Moorhead Senior High School, in Minnesota. I started my cross country career as a Freshman, seemingly late compared to others however, after being approached by my current coach Jeremy Blake at an 8th grade track meet after my 1600m run; he asked me if there was an interest in joining cross country. I knew it was going to be a tough decision as I had been playing volleyball, basketball and running track since fifth grade. However, after reflecting on my athletic past and realizing that running was something I enjoyed; not only in track, but in my free time. Every Summer starting in 7th grade I would run in 5k, 10k, and even a Half Marathon for which I finished 3rd in my age division (12-18 year olds) as a 13 year old. It became clear that my hobby, was my passion and I never looked back.
My two full varsity seasons on cross country have been a success. In Minnesota we ran 4ks my first year, I ran my personal best of 15:14 at our Section Meet in Alexandria, MN and qualified for State. Qualifying for State was not my only accomplishment as a Freshman I was also named Rookie of the Year, and Captain for our next Season. During my Sophomore year Minnesota moved to the 5k, I ran my personal best 19:36 at the Perham Invitational in Perham, MN. Not only was I captain, but named Most Valuable Runner (MVR).
Cross country has not been my only success story thus far. I have ran two full varsity seasons on track, and one full varsity season as a nordic skier. During track I run any race from the 400 to the 3200 (including relays) and as a Freshman was named Rookie of the year. Aside from Athletics, I have lettered in Academics and am currently ranked 17 out of 427 students as I carry a 3.98 cumulative GPA.
I have been in accelerated classes since I began High School, these include Honors Physical Science, Honors Biology, College Algebra, AP Us History, and College Functions/Trigonometry. Aside from my already listed extra curriculars I am apart of Student Council and play the flute. I currently play in the highest band at my high school, wind ensemble. I huge part of my career that often goes unnoticed is my support system.
My Parents Joel and Janeen have always supported me in my decisions, especially when I made the transition to Cross Country. They live in Moorhead, the largest city in northwest Minnesota with a population of 42,000. I have an older sister Amanda, and brother Dalton as well as a younger sister Alicia. Recently I was given a new role of Aunt, to my nephew Bo. Our house is never quite, especially with our Beagle, and two cats. As I look forward to the rest of my high school career, I am hopeful for also the opportunity to continue running at the college level.Running has been my focus, and will continue to be. This adventure hasn’t always been easy, in fact it has at times been frustrating. But, through the frustrations it has allowed me to push myself and others; it has given me an opportunity to see what I am capable of and strive for better. This career started as a simple conversation, and has grown from a hobby, to my passion.
