Personal Statement
For starters, my name is Marissa and I'm a senior at Westdale Secondary School. I am currently an IB as well as a French Immersion student, which has really had a positive effect on my work ethic and helps me to maintain good grades. I really enjoy discovering new movies and music, I write a lot considering I'm a writer for the school newspaper, and I've taken a lot of interest in matters of social justice. English and French are my favourite subjects and in addition they are my strongest. I've taken fouryears of both, but prior to high school I attended a French first language elementary school, making me fluent in both languages. I like to think of myself as a charismatic and well-rounded girl as well as being very competitive in all aspects of my life. I take a lot of pride in my work and my accomplishments, and I think it's important to set myself apart from others so I can reach my academic, athletic and personal goals. In terms of education, I aspire to work as a secondary educator or a public relations specialist. I find the idea of inspiring young people like myself and my friends very appealing, but I'm also very fascinated by the media, it's evolution, and the increasing influence it has on our culture and society. Athletically, I would love to pursue a professional career in track and field. I believe that I'm a very strong competitor. In training I work very hard and I'm very committed to improving as an athlete, but I always make sure to have a lot of fun. It's important for me to have a balance between the two, and not take myself so seriously to the point that I'm no longer enjoying myself. I find that balance helps you grow as an athlete as well as a person, and growth is important to me. I try to always surround myself with people and things that I can learn from, and I also believe that there are things to be learned from everywhere. This outlook keeps me inquisitive and always thinking critically. In short, I would describe myself as a hardworking, goal-oriented student-athlete with a lot to offer to a school community as well as a competitive team.
