First and foremost, I am an extremely driven, determined and dedicated student-athlete with a record of success both in the classroom and on the field. I like to consider myself an all-around athlete with an addiction to pole vault. From junior high through my freshman year I played volleyball, basketball, softball as well as track and field. I have since narrowed down my activities so I can concentrate my efforts on pole vault and speed training. I do have a passion for volleyball and wasn’t quite ready to let that go and chose to play my junior year. My ultimate goal is to become part of a university that has high academic and athletic standards where I can become a valuable asset to the track and field team all while embracing the college experience and obtaining a prestigious degree.
I started track and field in 7th grade. I knew I had been given natural athletic abilities and my coaches also seemed to notice. They asked if I wanted to try pole vault, and the rest is history. My favorite event is obviously pole vault, but I also long jump, run sprints and relays. I only worked with my school coaches my freshman year and was able to qualify for the state track meet. Then, I began working with a vault coach my sophomore year to help develop my abilities and understanding the physics of the event. I was again able to qualify for the state track meet as a sophomore and hope to continue my success through my next two high school seasons.
What I believe are the keys to success have been instilled into me from a young age. The main focus has always been on work ethic, time management and responsibility. Work ethic just comes with the territory growing up in rural Texas. Coming from families of ranchers and general contractors, hard work was not only expected but demanded. I can’t count how many times I have heard “You better out work everybody, every day!” Secondly, time management is a valuable trait that helps provide success for all aspects of life. Having the ability to prioritize and organize daily tasks has become an important part of my life. It allows me to make time to focus on academics and athletics all while trying to balance our fast paced lives. Last, understanding that I am the only person responsible for my success and/or my failures is another virtue I live by. Holding myself accountable is motivation to work hard, prioritize my time and push everyday to be successful in all that I do.
