Dear Coach,
My name is Mikayla Shearin, and I’m a freshman at East View High School in Georgetown, Texas. I’ve been running track since I was 7 years old, starting in a community league before moving to club. Track has always been my passion, and I’m committed to pushing myself to improve every season.
I was born premature at just 2 lbs 7 oz and spent 45 days in the NICU. From the start, I had to fight—whether it was overcoming early health challenges, working through a learning disability, or facing personal hardships. At 9 years old, I experienced something no child should ever go through, but I held onto that secret until I was 14. With the support of my family, friends, and counseling, I’ve found healing and strength, and track has been a huge part of that journey. It’s my outlet, my focus, and my motivation to keep moving forward.
In my first year of track, I shocked my mom by qualifying for the Junior Olympics. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go due to finances. The following year, my parents made sure we were prepared, and I qualified again—this time in the 100m and long jump. I ended up placing 9th in the nation, and that experience showed me just how much I was capable of.
What sets me apart is my resilience and work ethic. No matter what obstacles come my way, I refuse to let them define me. I stay dedicated to my training, my academics, and my personal growth. I take pride in my ability to push through challenges and continue striving for excellence.
Outside of track, I have a passion for fashion, makeup, and skincare, and I dream of traveling the world one day. Right now, I see my future in coaching and training because I love helping others reach their full potential.
I would love the opportunity to be part of a college team where I can continue to grow as an athlete and a person. Thank you for your time and consideration!
