Brooke Roy '11 Recruiting Profile

Having being born and raised on the North Shore of Hawaii I spent most of my time, outside of school, in the ocean. Surfing, swimming, diving, paddling, etc. is things I grew up doing, therefore I have always been extremely comfortable in the water. I started to play water polo the summer of my 5th grade year; I was 11 years old at this time. I fell in love with the game and have been playing ever since. I have always been playing up in water polo. When I was in the intermediate level, I used to practice with the older girls, always wishing that I could play with them in their games. A year later when I was a freshman, I begun to start for Kahuku�??s varsity team. In the 2008 O.I.A championship game, I started with the seniors of our team, I scored 4 out of the 6 points it took our team to win. My sophomore year I made the all-star team and learned a lot about defensive playing. This year we won O.I.A�??s again, the score was 12-11. I scored 6 of that 12, helping our team take the title. Next year I will be a senior and I don�??t know how the year will turn out, but I know I have many things to improve on. I hope to progress as a player and learn more about the game. Because I am a twin, I have grown up learning how to share and be a team-player. I have always had to work with someone since a very young age. I think because I have learned these skills I can use them to be successful on any team I am on. One of the main reasons I want to leave Hawaii and go to a school in California is because though Hawaii is wonderful in so many ways I feel that it is also very limiting. I want to broaden my horizons and see what else is out there. I know leaving my home, the beaches and the people I have grown up with and love is going to be difficult, and I know that it would be an easy way out if I choose to go to college here, but I know that I will grow so much more as a person if I choose to leave. My mother owns a small retail shop that sells children�??s clothes in a Haleiwa, a town close to our house. I want to help my mom run her shop; therefore I want to get my business degree. My mother didn�??t attend college and she has shared with me her regret in that. She feels like she could have done so much more with the shop and knows that it will benefit me in many ways. I want to learn more about business and marketing techniques. The reason for me wanting to play in college is I don�??t know what I would do without it. Water Polo has been such a big part of my life for a long time and I am not ready to give it up. I love the feeling of being a part of a team and I will miss it so much if I don�??t play. I know that being a college athlete is a challenge, but I�??m ready to give it a try.
