Getting a relatively late start to wrestling compared to my peers at first seemed to be a disadvantage for me, as I started this sport in 9th grade. Now I am beginning to see how this late start is working to my advantage. I feel like I am more motivated to learn and absorb as much as possible from my coaches and peers. My coaches saw my eagerness and elected me as team captain the summer before Junior year. They said that they appreciated how I supported and encouraged my teammates and also how I was eager to learn from them. During this time as team captain, I learned how to be a leader and a role model to my teammates who were just starting out in the sport. I used my experience with starting late to help the new kids on the team. During this time, our team was able to take eight of our wrestlers to CIF, the largest CIF lineup we have had in six years. Wrestling has taught me hard work, discipline, and sticking with something even when it’s not going well will pay off. All of these values have transferred off the mat. When I volunteered to stay after school to clean the chem lab, my AP Chemistry teacher said he has never seen a student clean the lab so thoroughly and efficiently. In addition to wrestling, I am committed to pursuing a career in chemical engineering. Beyond that I hope that your college will allow me to serve in my community as giving back has always been a priority to me. Thank you in advance for your consideration to wrestle at your school.
