My name is Javier, I'm a highschool senior from Canada hoping to continue my wrestling career in college. I started wrestling just four years ago, in grade 9. At first, wrestling was a way to try something new, but after finding rapid success in the sport, wrestling became a huge part of my life and my goals. Wrestling has taught me to be incredibly disciplined, and that I am capable of pushing myself much harder than I ever thought was possible.
Despite only having four years of experience, I have made huge improvements that I'm very proud of. I have been able to compete at the highest levels in Canada against athletes with vastly more years of experience.
What separates me from other wrestlers is my rapid rate of improvement, which I believe outpaces that of any other athlete. In just four years I have progressed from knowing almost nothing about the sport of wrestling to becoming one of Canada's top highschool competitors. This rapid rise to success in my wrestling career not only reflects my dedication, drive, and hardwork, but my ability to learn and improve at an accelerated rate when compared to my peers. My commitment on and off the mat has led me to become a Canadian U20 World Team Trials Bronze medalist at just 17 years old, and I just recently won my first open/university tournament, the U of C Dinos Open.
I am the captain of my highschool wrestling team. I know that the atmosphere in a practice room plays a tremendous role in having a successful team. I believe that creating a positive, hardworking environment is essential when aiming for success, which is why I strive to set the standard in terms of effort at every practice.
Outside of wrestling, I’m dedicated to my academics. I have maintained a 95% average throughout my entire highschool career. I plan to study Kinesiology in college, in hopes of gaining a better understanding of best practices for optimizing sports performance through exercise and nutrition. I’m passionate about learning the science behind athletic performance, and want to better understand how athletes can become the best versions of themselves. This knowledge will not only assist me in my wrestling career, but I hope to one day make a living by helping young wrestlers and athletes reach their goals through science based guidance and support.
Outside of wrestling, I played many sports including football, basketball, and cross country, but the activity that had the biggest impact on me was my many years spent as a competitive dancer. Dance taught me important lessons of character; respect, gratefulness, the ability to manage nerves, and the importance of doing things even when you don’t want to are a few examples. Dance also played a huge role in my physical development, it gave me a unique sense of spatial awareness and a great amount of control over my body, which carries over very well to my wrestling. The skills I learned from dance have given me a unique advantage on the mat, improving my scrambling, coordination, footwork, and my ability to stay composed at all times.
I’m excited to bring my drive for constant improvement to a college wrestling room. I know that I have a lot more to achieve, and a very high ceiling. I’m confident that my commitment to the sport of wrestling will make me a great addition to any team. I am excited for the opportunities college wrestling will bring to help me improve my skills and push my limits. I look forward to growing both as an athlete and a student, and to contributing to a team that strives for excellence the way I do.
