What the Coaches are Saying...
Sep 11, 2018

“I am the University of Wisconsin Men’s Rowing Varsity Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. A large part of my recruiting efforts include reaching out to high school athletes who have an interest in collegiate athletics to provide them an introduction to rowing. We do this by offering two one-day “Introduction to Rowing” clinics (December and March every year), designed for guys with zero rowing experience. Our program has a storied history of developing novices (guys with no rowing experience prior to college) into champions. Beau Hoopman, our current Freshman Coach is a perfect example of that: a golfer in high school who walked onto our team and after four successful years at Wisconsin went on to win two Olympic medals in rowing. While not everyone is destined to be a Collegiate National Champion or Olympian, there is no way to know unless they try. More than 50% of our current roster had never rowed before college. We realize that rowing is almost unknown at the high school level in Wisconsin, but that is not important. We are looking for superior athletes (big lungs, big legs, with a relentless competitive spirit) – we will teach you how to row once they are here. This ‘talent transfer’ is something our team relies and thrives on, and has proven to be effective across sports. We do not want you to stop playing your current sports, in fact we would prefer you continue building your skills and athleticism on the teams you are currently on so you come to Wisconsin a blank slate, so to say. Right now we just want to offer you an opportunity to try the sport through our camps and answer any questions they may have. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. LM”
