What the Coaches are Saying...
Sep 11, 2018

“My name is Chris Carmichael, Ph.D., Head Women's Soccer Coach at Bob Jones University where we just won our NCCAA National Championship. We just finished our third year at BJU (2012 was our inaugural season where we ended the season with a 7-9 record, 2013 went a cumulative 15-5-2 record and 2014 were 12-5-1) and have built what I believe to be one of the best soccer cultures I have ever seen. Our facilities are one of the best in the country (2 full-sized lighted fields, 1 full sized unlighted field that will be lighted soon, three 1/2 sized fields, several small sided fields, two futsol courts, and state-of-the-art training facilities). Our home opener had over 5,000 fans and we were averaging between 1500-2500+ fans per game thereafter. Most importantly we have a great group of girls that absolutely love training with each other, playing, hanging out, doing things, and just really support each other. We never once had an issue the past two years, and they strive to keep getting better and push each other to become the best players they can. Obviously the coaching staff has a big part in that, but the players are absolutely awesome and are the reason for the successes we had for our first year. I played at EIU, NCAA DI, and later PDL before going into coaching. I have my USSF E, D and C License and NSCAA Regional Diploma, Advanced Regional Diploma, National Diploma, and Advanced National Diploma and UEFA B. I was the former Head Men's Soccer Coach at Malone University where in three years helped to develop a East Region #1 seed and a very successful program (prior to me taking over the men's team was historically dead last in their division and had 10 years of losing records). I love learning, and it keeps me on top of my game with fresh ideas. We play a very indirect Barcelona style of play that allows players to be creative with enough organization to collectively attack and defend. We typically play a 4-3-3 (attacking looks more like a 2-3-2-3) but have played 4-4-2, 4-1-3-2, 4-2-3-1, 3-4-3, 3-1-3-3 and 3-5-2 depending on the situation. My coaching style relies upon edifying and encouraging my players. I don't yell or scream, but try to let my players have the freedom to just play without the pressure from a coach...I want my players to be the best, to develop field vision, confidence, and technical and tactical skills to use in the game, all of which require a nurturing mentor type of leadership and that is what we try to do. Our general tactical style would be a taki taka Barcelona type of system of play. We teach our players to think critically about the game, how to attack and defend in different situations. The complexity of the contemporary game is fascinating and our girls understand this game at a very high level. BJU is nestled in the Piedmont of the mountains and is an absolutely beautiful area and we have one of the safest and most beautiful campuses around. We have many majors to select from as well. Most all of our faculty possess a Ph.D. from the nations top universities. I would like to invite you to look at our university at to see if this is the type of university (Christian) you might be interested in. If you are interested, I would be happy to discuss more details with you. We play against NCAA DII, DIII and NAIA universities, many of which are ranked in the top 25 in the country. Needless to say we have a very competitive schedule. We currently play NCCAA DII and will be making application to NCAA as well. We are a Christian, liberal arts university where you can grow your faith, challenge your potential, and follow Christ. If you have internet access, you will be able to see the following information that will help you decide if BJU is the right match for you: Campus Visit: BJUOnline: Outreach Ministries: For a full description of our degree programs, click on the following link: Our online Catalog contains a complete class list for each major. The first step of admission is to send us an application form online from Please include $250 with your application for the processing fees. This fee is refundable if you choose not to come to BJU, and if you do, this is applied to your tuition and fees so either way it works out for the student. After you submit your application, you will receive an e-mail confirmation providing you an internet link to your secure web portal. Your web portal will provide the information you need to finish your admission. I will also send you additional instructions after I review your application. We have a section on our web page just for international student admission. You will have to take the TOEFL test, and this page will provide some additional information which you will want to read through: For international players, we require a TOEFL score of 60, and SAT score of 860 and ACT of 18. Our usual scholarship. For domestic players we require an ACT of 18 or SAT of 860 to be eligible to play. Our annual costs are about $19,000 for room, board, tuition and fees and we have alot of financial aid available. Most students pay between $4000-7000 depending on their financial aid package, with some less. In BJU's five-year strategic plan, the President, Dr. Jones, revealed BJU's vision: BJU will be, by God's grace, the top aspirational choice for those who desire a biblically faithful liberal arts education that fosters the development of Christlike character. This is a vision that challenges each one of us here at the University, and it is one that we are all very excited about and are already working to achieve. Please feel welcome to write with any questions about our academic programs, admission, or the materials I included above. I look forward to working with you and hope to see your application soon.
