Greg Maddux said that “The best pitchers have a short-term memory and a bulletproof confidence.” Whenever I take the mound, I always take a moment to tell myself this.
My name is Grayson Goldberg, and I have been playing baseball since I was 7 years old. This was the same year that my beloved Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years. I remember watching Kyle Hendricks, “The Professor,” compile a league leading 2.13 earned run average that season. As impressive as that was, my mom and dad always talked about how Hendricks had graduated from a top university, and was not only a great pitcher, but also a true student-athlete. With Hendricks being one of my favorite players and my middle name being Ace, pitching became my passion.
I work year-round on my baseball skills and have been training with Coach Joe Knudsen and Coach Justin Drexler in and out of games since I was 9 years old. In the off season, I also work with Coach Jim Paduch, who played professional baseball and is currently a pitching coach in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization, and lift with a trainer to improve my strength and conditioning and overall athleticism.
At school, I also work extremely hard and have been a straight A student all my life. As a seventh grader, I was one of only a handful of students to qualify for Honors Geometry at New Trier High School. I have received several academic awards, including two Scholastic Creative Writing Awards, and being named a Patriot’s Pen Regional Winner, and served as president and vice president of the student council for 6th and 8th grade, respectively.
My mind has always been my greatest asset, whether for school or for sports, and I want to attend a strong academic university where I can challenge myself in the classroom and on the baseball field. In the meantime, I am looking forward to playing for Coach Paul Kosinski at North Shore Country Day High School.
