I’m going into my sixth year of catching for the only AAU travel ball team I have played on (Batter’s Box Renegades in Westfield, MA.). My coaches have allowed me to call my own games since my 10-u season that has given me the opportunity to recognize the importance of the pitcher/ catcher relationship. My in-game knowledge continues to grow, which also allows me to help the younger catchers behind me working with this same organization. I also enjoy helping younger catchers and players who, like me, want to gain as much knowledge and skill as those before me. As a student-athlete, I believe that keeping a balance in the classroom, on the field, and in my personal life is most important. Baseball has been a great teacher as it has taught me many life skills such as the ability to lead individually and in both small and larger groups. With respect to time management, I have been able to keep a balance a 20-hour workweek, on top of a rigorous training schedule, which includes team practices, private catching and hitting instruction, and a weight training regimen all while maintaining a 3.76 GPA.
The leadership skills that I have learned from baseball, I would argue, are the most important both on and off the field. As a catcher you are rightfully expected to be the leader of the team, I have fully embraced this role. From a young age, I have been running portions of practices myself, keeping my teammates on point and locked in with what our coach expects, and keeping morale and focus up during practices and games.
