My name is Ben Spence and I want to be a college baseball player.
Baseball has played a huge part in making me who I am. For most of my playing career I’ve been the smallest player on the teams I’ve played for. To succeed, I had to outwork everyone else. The good news is I’ve finally started to grow but all those years as the small kid helped forge who I am. I believe its made me mentally tough and resilient. I had to learn to set goals and develop the discipline necessary to achieve them. I grind as hard as any player I know.
Baseball has also taught me that hard work pays off. Covid-19 meant my sophomore year of high school baseball was cancelled but I was Freshman pitcher of the year and Freshman MVP at my high school in 2019. By training as hard as I could, I’ve been able to add 7-8 mph of mound velo each of the past two years. I plan on repeating those gains my last two years of high school.
I’m coachable, loyal and I always put the team first. I do believe I provide leadership by example but I haven't been much of the vocal type of player to date. But I've been taught my whole life to have a growth mindset and to challenge myself by getting outside my comfort zone. So I am willing to learn how to lead more vocally in the future, especially if it is needed for your program.
I have a 3.82 gpa and I think that shows I'm responsible and put first things first.
I’m looking for a school with a great team culture. I want to be part of a brotherhood that plays hard for each other, is accountable to one another and has each other’s back. A team with that mindset can do great things. I want to play for coaches who can help me reach my full potential as a player and person.
I’m still working through what I want to study in college. I have an interest in accounting or analytics but I want to do more research before I make any decisions.
Whoever gives me the chance to play for them will be rewarded with every ounce of focus, effort and dedication I have. I know I’m capable of great things when I get my chance.
