My name is Alexia Jorge, I am a Seventeen year old Senior at Lyndhurst High School, my GPA is a 3.7. This coming winter I plan to take my SAT’s for the first time. Unfortunately, COVID-19 caused them to be postponed my Junior year. I am a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. At Lyndhurst High School, I am currently taking Honors Italian IV, PreCalculus and Statistics as electives, aside from the required courses of English, Gym/Health. Some of my hobbies are CrossFit work out for speed, strength and agility. I also spend time volunteering at a local animal shelter where I wash and play with the animals, I spend time playing/practicing baseball and watching baseball. Most days when I have free time, you will find me at one of the local baseball fields working on perfecting my ability.
Baseball is my all-time favorite sport, even though I have wrestled, ran cross country, threw shot put for indoor track and played basketball. Although I am good at shot put, nothing captures my heart the same way that baseball does. When I was three years old; my father needed an extra player and used me to substitute for my older brothers T-Ball team… I’ve been hooked ever since. During my first Minor Little~ League season my coach said that since I was one of the bigger kids on the team, he was going to use me as the team’s catcher. I have never looked back since that first day behind the plate.
Being a catcher is a very tough position, both mentally and physically, yet I look forward to every day behind the plate, because I know how important a catcher's position really is, I do not take it lightly. There are several reasons that a catcher’s position is very important, defensively, I need to block everything that is thrown my way, make critical plays and protect MY house. Offensively, I need to be able to call a winning game, make split decisions and direct my teammates successfully. This is a skill that I have been able to hone with the help of some fantastic coaching. For several years I have been training and playing for the MLB/USA/PDP team. At 11 years old I attended their NTISB tryouts and then proceeded to their inaugural Breakthrough Series, held at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach Florida (which I have attended several times). I have also played in the MLB Grit Series which gave me the great opportunity to play in a tournament where the professionals do, at Globe Life Park in Texas. This is the home of the Texas Rangers. This was a truly awesome experience, however the best experience I have had thus far was being invited to tryout and making The USA Woman’s National Team and winning a GOLD medal. It was an honor and an unbelievable pleasure to represent The United States of America in Aguascalientes Mexico during the COPBAE Pan American Championship Games. There were only six open spots on the team, I was chosen over thirty-six other players and was the only person representing the state of New Jersey. The tournament began one day after I turned sixteen years old. (which was the minimum age allowed to play) This was an enormous event that qualified us to compete in the Women’s Baseball World Cup in 2020. I can hardly wait! While Im not playing or training for Team USA, I am playing for Legion Post 139 as the starting catcher and The Hustle Baseball Academy for the fall. I have also played with other travel teams as the starting catcher and have played in tournaments across the continent. I have played at Cal Ripken South Carolina and the Ripken Experience in Maryland. I have also played in national tournaments at Rivets Stadium in Rockford, Illinois, Baseball Heaven in Long Island as well as Diamond Nation in New Jersey.
This coming spring will be my fourth year playing high school baseball for the Lyndhurst Golden Bears. My freshman year I played on the freshman team as the starting catcher. From time to time, I would be called in to pitch and play the infield. As a sophomore, I earned a spot on the varsity team where I was the starting catcher for several important games, such as County qualifiers where we upset the 4th seed advancing all the way to the final County game. As I am sure you can imagine, COVID~19 took away my Junior High School season , I am hopeful and anxiously waiting for my Senior season to begin. I am looking forward to a great season.
After high school, it is my intention to continue my baseball career in college. I know that I will always play and be involved in baseball. My work ethic, leadership and drive are unwavering. Baseball has always been an important part of my life, that is why I always play like someone important is watching me, because I know that one day... someone important will be. I hope to one day, once again play baseball at Texas Rangers Ball Park, but not in as an amateur.
