Personal Statement

Hi my name is Cooper Kunz. I am a baseball player seeking to return to the world of collegiate athletics. I attended a NJCAA school for one year after graduating High School and played baseball during my time enrolled there. After this, I took a two-year hiatus from the sport during which I served a mission for my church . I currently have 3 years of athletic eligibility remaining and easily transferrable credits that come with my associates degree.  I am eager to return to competing at a high level and am training each and every day to better myself as an athlete. I currently train at Push Performance located in Tempe, Arizona where I am receiving personalized instruction from multiple strength coaches and pitching coaches.

  • Cooper continues to show as a prospect on the diamond and continues to show progress in his baseball tools. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.18. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 1.92 as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. He will control the running game with his feet / arm. Hands are soft / sure and he sticks balls in the zone. He shows off his athletic abilities through the blocking process as he is a wall, keeping all balls in front. At the plate, he continues to shine and now displays outstanding hitting abilities with well above average power potential. Hands are quick (80 mph exit velocity) and work to and through a level swing path, creating extension. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 84 mph. Fastball has a range of 81-84 mph. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with early break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup and is a quality pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

  • Cooper Kunz C 5-9 165 R/R Cooper Kunz is a 2018 C/RHP with a 5-9 165 lb. frame from Smithfield, UT who attends Sky View HS. Medium, athletic frame with square shoulders and present strength proportioned throughout frame. Ran a 7.54 60-yard dash. Primary catcher, low set behind the plate, receives the ball out front, compact arm action with a tight release, shows nice carry and strength down to second base, gets on top of throws, projects with additional lower half, upright at release. Also pitched and impressed on the mound, clean delivery with a full and loose arm stroke through the back, works to a three-quarters arm slot with nice arm speed while creating separation between upper and lower halves. On line finish and shows balance to delivery, ball comes out clean and topped out at 83 mph, filled up zone with extension out front. Mixed secondaries, 11-5 shape to curveball with tight rotation, comfort in changeup with fading life down in zone while locating arsenal down. Righthanded hitter, begins with a slightly open stance and a high back elbow in the box. High leg lift trigger at start of swing for timing, stays short and simple with swing path to the ball. Stays inside with hands and looks to create lift out front at point of contact, moving parts to swing, nice carry off the barrel when squared, can work the ball to all fields. Named to Underclass West Top Prospect List. Excellent student. PG Grade 8
  • Camp/Event
  • USA West National Team Championships
  • 6/17/16 to 6/24/16
  • 06/17/2016 - USA Baseball 17U Championships. Coaches' Notes. Cooper is an athletic 2-way player who is a very hard worker. He brings his competitive attitude to the field everyday and pushes those around him to get better. Leadership type qualities that you want your catcher to have. He sits in well and presents a low/soft target. Lateral actions are quick, smothering pitches in the dirt off of his chest. As a hitter - Kunz shows quiet/simple actions waiting for a pitch he likes. He battles at the plate and fights deep into the count. Swing is level/repeatable as he connects and drives the middle of the field. Continuing to utilize his lower 1/2 will help to increase power at the plate. On the mound, he has smooth separation and drives downhill in-line toward the plate. FB tops out at 83 mph while showing slight tail. Breaking ball has 12/6 shape as he works to keep it down in the zone. He pounds the zone and challenges hitters to swing the bat, giving his defense a chance. Cooper shows his love for the game every time that he takes the field. He has a bright future ahead of him.
  • Camp/Event
  • College Prep
  • 5/28/16 to 5/28/16
  • 05/28/2016 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Cooper is a lean C/RHP who has a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, hands / feet work well together through a quick / clean transfer exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times showed in the 2.01 range with accuracy / carry on his throws. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, he shows a solid, athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a solid line drive approach. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 80-81 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup showing a feel for with sinking action. Off speed stuff show potential as being quality pitches. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound. With 3 years to further develop, Cooper has potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to progress his game.
