Personal Statement

The fact is I’m a simple guy living in a very complicated world these days. My high school experience with Freedom Project Academy has challenged me and is preparing me for the future. Several Key factors define who I am and will ultimately lead me in the future.

My Personal Faith matters most.

My Academic Studies will help determine my future profession.

My Athletic Baseball Career – Constant Improvement at every level

I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by my family that supports me at every turn in my life. They have taught me real life lessons that have provided a foundation for who I am today.

Baseball is a terrific game that will give us success and failure in a day. I have learned that good and bad will happen yet my work ethic of learning from each of those experiences to get better as a player and teammate is what matters. Getting Bigger, Faster and Stronger helps.

I get excited to play the game of baseball and the more I play, the more I see the journey chasing my dream on into the future as far and long as possible a reality. Great Coaches, Trainers and Motivators have supported my journey so far. Look forward to meeting their replacments.

  • Update July 29, 2021 Competed against some of the best baseball players in the country in Houston, Texas My approach was to play hard and learn as much as I can. Played on Team Minnesota. Joseph is a C in the 2022 graduating class. Medium frame with present strength to the build and plenty of remaining room to fill out. Primary C, who looks comfortable behind the dish with an athletic sit. Clean transfers and gains ground working through the ball. Creates good blocking angles with a soft chest. Throws from a 3/4 arm slot and an arm velocity of 85mph and a best pop time of 2.08 seconds. Result 2-throw-outs 2nd base, 2- throw-outs 3rd base. Covers the 5-hole and uses glove/hand to scoop ball. A right-handed hitter hits from a crouched and open stance. Simple load, with good use of lower half, and showed quick hands to baseball. Flat bat path and showed ability to make hard contact into both gaps. In live game action, Joseph reached base 6 times with a double, 2 singles, a BB, 3-RBI’s and a HBP. Recorded a bat exit velocity (soft toss) of 86mph. With continued growth and development, we foresee him having a bright future on the baseball field.

  • One day Pro- Workout. This program was run as a day to be reviewed by Program 15 scouts and was Not a Showcase. A real Nuts and Bolts review of my skill level. Honest comments were provided by experienced baseball executives. Gordon Blakeley- Scout Catcher -- middle of the field approach -- tries to keep hands inside the ball -- hard contact at times, but inconsistent in quality of hard contact -- HR potential as he matures and gets stronger - line drive game power - hands stay behind the plate ,good running stride. James Lofton- Scout Polished with natural instincts. Great makeup to be a good catcher in the future. He’s very aggressive and communicates from behind the plate. Good body control with athletic actions. Throws out the good runners, short release with the proper mechanics. Ken Harvey- Scout Short, compact, confident approach with definite power potential. Hands are quick, level, and have great extension after contact point. Base on the backside finish is very solid. These are all great attributes, but know you can improve by consistently staying within yourself. Accompany that with great plate discipline and now your talents increase even more.

  • Prep Baseball Report Kenosha Preseason I.D.
  • 2/14/21 to 2/14/21
  • 2021 Starts the year off right at PBR Kenosha Showcase: UPDATE -Positional Profile: C Body: 5-11, 200-pounds. Compact body type, strong lower half. Defense: 2.09-2.18 pop times. Replaces feet out of the crouch, directional with little ground gained. Soft receiver, strong hands, and above average blocker. Arm: RH. C - 75 mph. Short over the top arm, showed slight carry. Hit: RHH. Wide stance, crouched setup, minimal stride, heel lift initiates subtle hand load. Well above average bat strength, short to the baseball, gap to gap approach, made some of his best contact to the big part of the field. Power: Power bat that can go pole to pole; averaged an exit speed of 88.18 mph, among the best in attendance. Max exit speed recorded at 97.99 mph in BP. Run: 4.62 runner from home to first. While currently unranked and uncommitted, C Joseph Lagina (Freedom Project Academy) turned in a highly productive all-around performance on Sunday, which should land him on the state rankings inside our next update, following the winter. Lagina looked stronger, fitting the catcher’s physical mold, and it made his round of batting practice pop. He swings a right-handed bat with twitchy speed, and it helps craft some applicable in-game power potential long-term. His batted-ball metrics were arguably the day’s most impressive, too, as Lagina was responsible for both the farthest (363 feet) and hardest (98.0 mph) hit balls of the day. Defensively, the sturdy 5-foot-11, 200-pound backstop moves fluidly with above-average actions, and his throws to second were efficient and consistently on target.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2021 Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-America Tournament ( Pre-Selected Invitation)
  • 1/15/21 to 1/17/21
  • Baseball Factory Evaluation: Joseph continues to show as a top prospect on the diamond. Behind the dish, he presents a soft/sure mitt showing great pocket awareness sticking pitches. Quick lateral movements allow him to center/deaden pitches in the dirt off of a soft chest. Runners will not want to test his cannon for an arm with impressive pop times of 2.0. Offensively, he continues to shine through a crouched setup. He has athletic/smooth actions with fluid rhythm to load. He gets good hand separation and delivers the barrel with leverage, resulting in a barrel explosion (90 mph exit velocity) with the ball screaming off his barrel. Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament, I was put on Team America a collection of athletes from a cross section of the US. region. We competed in 3 games over a two-day period. A complete showcase workout was done early on Sunday morning. A series of hitting and defensive metrics details will be forthcoming. Improved my POP time and gained some insight from the BF Staff on things to work on my transfer quickening my time in the future. Hitting was Exit Velo along with indoor BP. Met some great Baseball people and really appreciated the invite to be a part of this event.
  • Camp/Event
  • College Baseball Prospect ID Camp
  • 10/10/20 to 10/10/20
  • Great Fall day to attend a regional camp and meet some really engaging college coaches from the Midwest. Mckendree, Lakeland, Marian, Lawrence Universities were represented with others receiving data. Showcase data gathered: 60 yard, 7.46, Pop Time 2.05, Home to 1st 4.42 all numbers consistent with my previous event numbers. The group of Catchers spent the morning session catching pitching bull-pens and working on improving our blocking, receiving and Pop mechanics along with drills that can help me in the future get better at each phase of my game. The afternoon session was all about Hitting with Exit Velo, soft toss and BP hitting opportunity which allowed the coaches present to review our swing and ways again to improve. This event was a more instructive event which I liked as I go into the off season preparing for the 2021 season. Plenty of lessons learned and great coaching relationships begun.

  • Huge Thank You to Coach Copeland and Coach Petzoldt for their input at their camp/showcase. Coach Copeland wrote, "Stay in the weight room and keep getting better, I liked how hard you pushed yourself at camp, it showed on and off the field." You will never regret the hard work you put into baseball. 35 athletes which included 6 Catchers. Coaches comments: I liked the way your hands worked although your release needs to get quicker. Long toss/throwing everyday will continue to better your arm strength. Your swing can improve, but I would like to see you load earlier so you are not as rushed. This will help you get off your backside. I can project that you could turn into a gap to gap hitter. Keep working on your speed and athleticism. Consistency is key. Key Takeaways: Catching short fluid arm action, accurate. Hitting square, balanced weight shift good. Swing short, good contact Gap to Gap hitter, Exit Velo 93. Overall lessons learned and events like this will make me a better baseball athlete. The work continues!

  • 8/02/20 to 8/02/20
  • Great Event, Strong Instructor Guidance and Input. Official College Recruiting Evaluation Tour- Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Joseph is a Catcher prospect who will graduate in 2022. Behind the plate, Joseph shows active footwork and creates good angles when blocking. He sits in a low stance and presents a good target to the pitcher. He makes a clean exchange and gains ground well on his throws, working to keep them accurate to the 2B bag. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a crouched stance with center balance. He shows fluid rhythm and drives through well with his lower half. He takes a direct swing with fast bat speed, leading to loud contact and great gap to gap pop. Overall, Joseph is a talented prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.http://members.baseballfactory.com/player/joseph/lagina/155fe669690840e7adde37e059f49ac2 Received and Accepted the Special Invitation to the 2021 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament January 15-17, 2021 Mesa Arizona

  • Great event to attend. Coaches were instructive, honest and the two days of baseball began with showcase data collection followed by pickup games for the balance of the 1st day and all of the 2nd. Toured the campus and was impressed by the simplicity of Minot the city itself. Metrics, 60 Yard: 7.35, POP Time: 2.13, Exit Velo: 83 (In Game)Notes: At the plate; showed some bat speed with decent current pop, and potential for future pop as the body becomes quicker. Wide stance also cuts off lower half power. BP swing did not translate to game as much. Behind the plate, worked hard and blocked and received extremely well. Throws were low and on-line. Need to improve hip mobility to better move around behind the plate. Recruiting Outlook: We are interested and have you on our 2022 list of players that we need to see next summer.

Great event with 47 high school athletes began with a dynamic stretch and warmup. Then proceeded to run a 60 yard sprint, infield and outfield defensive drills. Infield, Outfield drills gathered data while the Pitchers and Catchers worked bullpens. Finally the hitting session for all athletes was done along with a wrap-up of the days events. My major takeaway from this event was that I can continued to improve my skills as a catcher and pitcher everyday I am in the gym or practrice both mentally and physically. Key Takeaways: • Opportunity to speak directly to College Coaches one on one • Gained new insights from the Catching and Hitting instructors • Learned I can compete at a higher level both physically and mentally Well run and coordinated program TMB Sports and the access to the participating coaches was real good.

  • UW - MIlwaukee Fall Showcase Camp
  • 8/25/18 to 8/25/18
  • UWM Baseball Fall Showcase 2018 - High School Baseball Showcase and Camp program I attended. Great experience and insight from the coaching staff at UW Milwaukee D1 School. 48 players, 17 were pitchers and they separated us out after the 60-yard run and spent the morning working thru pitch philosophy, pitch location, pitch spin rates, desired pitch ball grips along with proper arm care and pre-pitch warmup drills. The balance of players infield (13), outfield (11) and catchers (7) worked on the home to first run, catcher pop time, throwing velocity and then live batting and velocity data tracking. The afternoon for me was an extended time of live play. Each pitcher went 5 outs and switched with another pitcher each throwing two - five out innings segments or max 20 pitches each outing. I pitched against mostly upperclassmen players and was confident to get fly balls, strike outs and only give up a few singles. Good outing. Day 1 of the program was the showcase portion which included 60-yard run, hitting velocity, live hitting session and fielding session. Day 2 Doubleheader games played amongst the 25-state team from around the country. My team played Kansas and Oklahoma. I played 1st and 3rd base and hit in the rotation. Day 3 Doubleheaders played against Kentucky and Ohio. I pitched 5 innings and played first base along with hitting in the rotation. Incredible talent on every team I faced, and it was a great opportunity to learn from the PBR staff coaching our team they provided good feedback on future things to work on.

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
