My name is Katharine Bruun, I am a junior at San Dieguito Academy in Encinitas, California, and a varsity field hockey player. I can play all the defensive positions and any other position on the field where I'm needed. I have been playing field hockey for the last 6 years, starting as a 6th grader, and at the time I had no idea what the sport was or how much I would grow to love it. In addition to field hockey, I also throw discus and shot put in the offseason, and I have even set a record at my school.
On the field I am a strong communicator, working with my teammates to control the play of the other team. Thanks to my many years of playing soccer I have a great awareness of the field and can often anticipate the next play. I am an aggressive player and I never give up, which is a great help to protect the goal.
When I started playing, I began as a goalie for 2 years and then transitioned to a defensive player on the field. This experience, even though I was very young, gave me a different perspective of the game and the positions. As a player, I have developed each year both my individual skills and as a leader on and off the field. In my freshman year of high school, I started on Junior Varsity and was pulled up to Varsity for the play-off games. As a sophomore, I was a starting Varsity defender. Although due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, this year we may or may not get a high school season, I am preparing just the same by leading small practices for my teammates and me.
To continue to grow my skills I started playing club field hockey in 8th grade first with Coastal Clash Field Hockey Club and now with HTC. Club field hockey has given me access to different coaches and coaching styles and opportunities to go to tournaments.
I look forward to being able to play field hockey for the rest of my high school years and into college. I am graduating in Spring 2022, and am looking for a college that has my desired degree in Biomedical Engineering to help people in creating new devices to evolve the world of medicine, all while being able to play field hockey.
