There's something about field hockey teams that is different than any other sport. Maybe it's the camaraderie that comes from collective back pain, or hearing the thwack of the ball against the back of the goal. Field hockey is unique in that one person cannot carry the whole team themselves: everyone must contribute. Our coach always says a team is only as strong as its weakest player, and in field hockey this is especially true.
When I picked up a stick in 7th grade, I had no plans to become a college player. In fact, I was merely filling my P.E. requirement. But the more I played, the more I fell in love. I used to think fall was my favorite season because of the changing leaves, now I know it is because of field hockey. But now that I've found indoor and a summer league, the whole year is great.
Academics have also always been important to me. I have always been a focused student, pushing myself to take the most high-level classes possible, even if that meant a lower grade. Learning has always been more important to me than letters, and quality of education is a huge factor in my college process.
Finding a school that combines great field hockey and academics would be a dream come true.
