I never knew that a raffle basket would become my future. No one in my family played field hockey, so it was not until fourth grade when I heard about it. Both of my parents were division 1 collegiate soccer players and they were extremely passionate about their sport, yet I had not found that passion for a sport. My parents won a field hockey raffle basket with a ball, stick, and one free season that led to me becoming a passionate field hockey player. They kept the basket hidden away until Christmas a few months later. Immediately, after receiving the basket, I read the rules, looked up youtube videos on basic skills, and found myself running around playing my new favorite activity outside despite the extremely cold winter weather. My dad and I played for hours that Christmas, and it was just the beginning. Now, I am a junior in high school and I have been playing for 8 years. The luck that got me started in field hockey has since turned into grit, strength, and love for the game. I did not realize it then, but that raffle basket mixed with my determination and love for field hockey was setting me up to play it in college one day. Now, I strive to find a school that can nurture and grow my passion for field hockey and academics, as both are equally important to me.
