When I think of myself as a person and a field hockey player, the usual descriptions come to mind: determined, hard worker, team player. But while trying to compose my personal statement, something wasn't sitting right with me. I wanted to express how I truly felt about the sport and somehow show the passion that I have for field hockey and what an impact it has on my life. That's when it hit me, my journey as a field hockey player is that similar to the journey of sea glass.
Just like sea glass, I was unrefined in the beginning of my field hockey journey. I knew what to do, but needed a little guidance. That is when I started playing club for Spirit of USA my freshman year. Throughout the years my coaches, Michelle Vitesse, Carissa Vitesse, and Kenny Patrone, taught me valuable skills and helped me gain confidence in my playing. These three coaches have been my biggest influences and inspire me to improve my playing everyday. My coaches and teammates are like the ocean; they continue to polish, support, and refine my athletic abilities.
Each individual piece of sea glass is unique and imperfect. As I wash up on shore, I look forward to joining a team that continues to push, challenge, and support each other as players and people.
