I have been playing field hockey for about three years, with the last two years being as a Goalkeeper. Do not let my short career deter you as I have come a very long way in a very short time!
I moved to goalie because my high school team was short a goalie and needed someone to step up. I jokingly said I would do it, and my coach pulled me to the side after practice one day and asked if I truly wanted to try it out. The next day, my coach and I had a one-on-one practice where I learned the basics of being a goalie, and not only did I have a natural talent for it, but I loved it from the moment I put the pads on. As the season progressed, I only got better, and although I am small for a goalie, I am very fast, agile, and flexible, and can easily get from one side of the cage to the other.
As a teammate, I am energetic and cheer my teammates on to the best of my ability, but I also take playing extremely seriously and I know when to be fun and energetic and when to be calm and collected. Playing goalie is much different than playing midfield, as I did Freshmen year, but I learned a huge amount about the game itself and how to take responsibility for my defenders (telling them where to go, who is open, and when to go to the ball or let me save it). Playing goalie has been an eye-opening, life-changing experience for me, and I have truly found the sport that I love.
