Hi! My name is Kelsie Murphy. I am currently a senior, attending West Milford High School in Northern New Jersey. In addition to my academics, here, I participate in a variety of clubs and high school sports; including Chess Club, Varsity Club, Peers As Leaders, History Club, Golf, Lacrosse, and Field Hockey. As I look to continue my education, I also look to bring my game in the sport of field hockey to the next level.
I think any of my teammates or coaches, or anyone who knows of me for that matter, could agree to the fact that I eat, sleep, and breathe the sport of field hockey. I came upon the sport when I entered sixth grade, and began playing competitively in seventh grade. For my middle school years, both seventh and eighth grade, I played on the town's Senior Travel team. My freshman year of high school, I started on the junior varsity team as a goalie, and also had time playing mainly back, but also some midfield. My sophomore year, I was a starter for the varsity team playing left back. During the beginning of that season, I attended a friend's college field hockey game, and realized that continuing to play the sport I love in college would be pretty cool. When there is something I want to accomplish or a goal I want to reach, I become very determined and dedicated; I set my standards high and push myself; working every chance I get to achieve what I want. The second the season ended, my off-season training began. Unfortunately, it was brought to a halt when I suffered a knee injury in lacrosse practice. I underwent surgery, and attended physical therapy. Knowing that the high school field hockey season was just a few months out, scared me to be quite honest. But, it only made me work harder. My team needed me, and I was not going to let them down. Whether it was sitting in my bed doing simple stick work over the side, watching skills and drills videos on youtube, practically studying the previous seasons game film, or reading books about field hockey; I was doing whatever I could to come back even better for the season. In just over four months, I was released by my doctor to play again, making it back just in time.
Despite this set back, I was able still able to accomplish a lot. I was a starter, playing left back. For the second year in a round, my team and I won the Passaic County Tournament. As an individual, I received both Second Team All-County and Second Team All-Conference. I was also named a Captain of my High School Team for the 2018 season.
I believe that my team mentality, perseverance, coachability, and love for this sport will help me to be successful at the next level.
I am ready and excited to see what the future holds for me in both academics and athletics.
