I remember going to my first ever field hockey practice in 1st grade with tears in my eyes and heading home with a smile on my face. My anxiety was palpable until the first tap of the ball with my brand-new stick. I felt the weight of worry lift off my chest and I haven't forgotten that sense of relief. I have played every Fall and most Spring seasons since then and began to grow as a player. From the beginning, my stick work was good. I was able to easily get around other girls my age and hit harder than girls older than me. People noticed it and I was motivated by the compliments and attention. By the time I started varsity my sophomore year of high school, I didn't perform on the field as well as I used to; my team lost in quarterfinals and there were no individual accolades for me. This past year (my junior year) was different. I realized that I shouldn't rely on what others thought about me as a player to better what I thought of myself and my own abilities. I stepped it up and led my team in goals (22) and was second in assists (7) and our team went undefeated during the regular season in a very competitive DI field. We won our conference, and I was selected First Team All-Conference and Second Team All State. But more importantly, my mindset completely changed; I was in love with playing field hockey again. And, I wanted to win, regardless of my individual statistics. I cannot wait to take the same energy onto the college field.
