Personal Statement

Hello! My name is Evan Mulberry and I am a junior at Simon Kenton High School in Independence, Kentucky. I am a 5’11, 187 pound varsity wide receiver. I started playing football at the age of eight and have always had a love for the game. My mom often says from the time I could talk, I would carry a football around and talk about playing football. I have a 3.16 GPA and will be taking the ACT this spring. My goal, for as long as I can remember, has always been to play football in college.

As with most programs, football at Simon Kenton is a full year commitment that includes practices, films, weight training, and other team related activities. In addition to these requirements, I also attend personal training sessions three times a week throughout the off-season, one time per week in season and see a nutritionist monthly to make sure both my body and my nutrition are in top form. I fully understand the importance of being committed during the off-season and know the difference that can make in my success as a player. For this reason, I have also been a member of the varsity track team since my freshman year where I am able to work on my speed and explosiveness. In the summer months, I volunteer with the Simon Kenton Youth Football camp and really enjoy helping the next generation of players learn the skills they need to find success on the field. I always try to lead by example, with both my teammates and those youth players I may come into contact with. Something most people do not know about me is that I was diagnosed at the age of 8 with ADHD. Not only have I had to be committed to working hard for my successes on the football field, but I also have worked with a tutor weekly to ensure I have academic success in the classroom as well. I have met a lot of people who use issues such as ADHD as an excuse when they are not successful. I am grateful my parents raised me to believe I may have to work harder than everyone else, but that I should never give up on my dreams.

I believe I can offer a team a player who has an excellent knowledge of the game. In youth football I played wide receiver and outside linebacker. Simon Kenton is a platooning team and I have really enjoyed being on the offensive side of the ball. Every time I take the field, whether it’s a passing play or blocking for a run play, my goal is to always make a positive difference in the game.

Football is my dream, and for that reason I’ve decided to study sports medicine in college where I’ll be able to continue to use all of the knowledge I’ve gained over the years as a player. I’d love to be a part of a college program that finds value and success in their football program and their players, a place where I can prepare for my future in the field of sports medicine while continuing to challenge myself on the field.
