Growing up as the oldest in a family of four children, I was granted the leadership role by circumstance. I am lucky enough to have a younger brother and twin sisters. Before I was even 4 years old, I was the leader of my siblings, not even realizing how this would impact who I’ve become. Over the years I had to be responsible, accountable, and reliable to help my parents. I remember making sure everyone was ready for school in the morning, and then ensuring our safety as we walked home. Also, my siblings taught me patience and empathy. For example, when my younger brother started high school, I was able to teach him a few things since I had just been in his shoes a couple years before. And lastly, early on I realized that they looked up to me. They saw all my hard work and dedication to football, so before I knew it, my brother followed in my footsteps but as wide receiver, and my twin sisters went in separate directions. One is a competitive gymnast, and the other is a competitive volleyball player. As their big brother, they were always watching and learning, and along the way I built the leadership skills I have today to lead my team. I always made sure to take pride in my studies as well. I was prepared to be the leader I am. It taught me responsibility which developed a sense of accountability and reliability that are fundamental to my leadership style with the team. It is crucial to understand my teammates’ perspective and provide support. Active listening, empathy, compromise, and respectful communication is what it takes for me to resolve conflicts among the team. As the Quarterback, my coach reminds me to lead by example to build trust and respect. And lastly, accountability and humility built me into the man I am today. I can simplify complex ideas and provide clear messages on the field and in the locker room.
