"You're a big guy and our middle school team needs big wrestlers. I'm calling the coach now!"
These are the words that forever changed my future. My family relocated after Hurricane Florence in October 2018 and the day we were registered in our new schools changed everything. My brothers elementary school teacher recruited me for my middle school that very day.
I've always played football and have been known for my size, but I knew nothing about wrestling. They told me it would be tough. That it would push me to every limit imaginable. So, I went for it. I quickly learned that while I have the talent and determination it takes to be successful in this sport, wrestling isn't my future. There is no option to "go pro" unless I learn striking and submissions and compete in the UFC. Wrestling is, however, the path to my future and ultimately, the best possible version of myself.
Wrestling isn't just any sport. I started learning immediately the importance of discipline. I thought I knew what hard work was. Blood sweat and tears. Shed every single day. Working harder and harder at this sport that forces me to always do better both when that whistle blows, and in my everyday life. I train hard to give myself the best financial opportunity for an education that my parents never had and so not to worry about the financial hardships of pursuing my dreams. I train hard for my mom, who is raising two boys alone traveling state to state, weekend after weekend making sure I have every opportunity to have the best possible future. I train hard for my brother, who looks up to me and has started wrestling as well.
I win humbly and for my future. And when I lose? I have something new to learn. Every failure is a life lesson. It's an opportunity to reflect on my demeanor and disposition. To review what I did wrong and turn my weaknesses into strengths.
