Within the first week of tackle football, my coach advised me at five years of age to consider another sport because I was “not cut out for this.” I was a kindergartner of smaller stature, but I resolved it would not be a hindrance. At year’s end, we made it to the Super Bowl and earned gold rings. The following year we returned and received silver rings. I continue to ruthlessly seek to attain the ultimate goal of playing at the collegiate level.
Although the taste of victory was sweet, I discovered football was not all about accolades. Playing has instilled discipline, perseverance, and leadership. Summer vacations were foregone to attend camps to improve skill. Strength and conditioning tested my limits. I practiced with upperclassmen to reveal my weaknesses and made necessary adjustments. Varsity players have now complimented my ability to come up with a block. As a center I was accustomed to taking the lead and directing teammates on the field gaining respect and trust. This was displayed as a running back’s hand was on me as we pushed for the additional yard on fourth down or as we drove the ball into the end zone during a tight game.
Physical ability is important, but the mental aspect is just as vital. Academics are a priority and extend beyond the classroom. For practices I arrived early, left late, and spent additional time reviewing film. I committed our playbook and signals to memory. Maintaining my composure under intense pressure came with experience. When an awkward snap occurred, I cast doubt aside and made up for it on the next play. Transferring high schools seemed an insurmountable obstacle. Upon leaving everything familiar, including teammates played with since the age of seven, I hesitantly walked onto a new field. Despite only playing center, I recognized this team could best utilize me on defense. I absorbed all I could and proudly got a sack during my first game, earning Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week.
Along the way I experienced setbacks. Five bones in my foot were broken which temporarily halted my ability to play. I endured physical therapy to re-learn walking correctly, but I thankfully avoided surgery. I was not as fortunate when I later dislocated and suffered a compound finger fracture. Occupational therapy assisted me in regaining full range of motion. Recently, my season prematurely ended yet again due to a leg injury for which I have now recovered. I embraced a supportive role by cheering on my team and manning the chains, which allowed me to interact with competitors on the sidelines. I experienced the game from a different perspective and I continue to follow some of these players on social media.
Football is constantly evolving. I am still learning from various coaches, upperclassmen, and former athletes. Each interaction has educated me on preparation required for playing football at the next level. My family initially exposed me to the sport, but I became personally responsible for improving as a player. Although enjoyable, it has required a measure of determination to stay the course. Desire pulled me through gut-wrenching situations and hardships forced me to take nothing for granted. I hope you will consider me as I continue my years-long football journey.
