Personal Statement

It all started summer going into the 2nd grade. I found something that I didn't realize how much I loved. Peewee football for the enumclaw wolverines. My dad encouraged me to play football and I liked the sport and just went with it. I met so many people that summer that I would grow up with throughout high school that became some of my best friends. I played for the wolverines for a total of 7 years. Wolverines league went by weight to age ratio. My birthday always was right after the registrations and I've always been pretty light and so I would be the older guy on the team and was one of the more mature players on the team.

I was one of the harder hitters on the team and played outside linebacker, and fullback. I played those positions up until 8th grade when they switched over to the league that went by grades. Most of my friends quit when they switched over because it moved the wolverines to the town right next to us. I still played but I was no longer the bigger guy. I switched over positions to slot receiver and corner. I still started but now I was one of the smaller guys on the team but I managed to do just as well that season.

Freshman year I was unsure to play highschool football. I was around 5’4 and 115 pounds. But I did play and it was the best decision I have ever made. I started that year at wide receiver and corner. It was a rough year because I was so little and took many shots from much bigger people. Halfway through the year I broke my arm and was out for the season. After that it was hard to get back into it, because I was so small and couldn't lift to get any bigger for around 2 months. After I got my cast off I never went to weights because I was embarrassed that everyone was so much stronger then me and my best friend(who was the other corner) was my lifting partner, and he was lifting twice as much as me. So the rest of freshman year I went home everyday of the offseason just did schoolwork. Post season, I received an award of finishing the season with a 3.7 or high GPA.

After what happened Freshman year, that did not set me up well for sophomore year. I was around 5’6 and 120 pounds. I did not start for the jv team but I still got some reps. Mainly just at corner on the scout team. I would get pushed around by the receiver because I couldn't out strengthen there block and would get man handled. After awhile I kinda just gave up and sat on the sidelines with people who never went in and got sucked up by their attitudes of not caring and I lost the love for the game.

Comes junior year I was around 5’8 and 130. I stilled played but it was not the same. I was very small and that got me really down. I still did the same thing as I did sophomore year, sitting on the sidelines talking to different friends on the team. I would get some plays during JV games at the end of the game if we were winning or losing by a large amount; that was about it.

After junior year season is when it hit me. This helped me mature at football, but most importantly life. I was doing this to myself and I know I love the sport, and it was only up to me. I started applying myself; I went to the weight room every day in the offseason and worked on my footwork, speed and strength. At this point I knew I was so far behind but I wanted this so bad. When spring ball came around, I was 6’0 and 150 pounds. I became the starting corner and was played up to my potential and established my starting position for season. I was still not where I wanted to be. My goal was 165 pounds for senior year season. I got a job at Jack In The Box that summer so I could have money to get a gym membership and buy my proteins. I worked a lot that summer so I missed some of the weight sessions at school but I would go to the gym after work and put in some more work.

Season comes and I am 6’0 and 160 pounds. Still had my starting spot at corner, and played every game with all I got. That led to me receiving First Team All League award. Now that my season is over, I am so proud of how hard I worked, and I would do it all over again. I love the sport as much or even more from when I did in my early wolverine days. I know I can get better and hope I can at the next level. All I want to do is just keep playing football.
