I have played basketball every year since my first grade YMCA team, always as a starter and usually as the top player. Even though I have always been a multi-sport athlete, basketball has been my main priority and favorite sport. I am versatile—despite being a sophomore, I was the only five position player on my high school varsity team this past season. Playing all positions and being a coach’s son has helped my basketball IQ greatly. I view it as my job to be a coach on the floor and make sure my teammates are in the right places on the court. I am not a selfish player. It is important to me to make the best play possible to give my team the best chance to win—not to fill up a stats sheet. I play hard. I don’t take plays off. I run the court with purpose on every possession, and I love to play lockdown defense and crash the boards.
Basketball has taught me a lot about leadership. Teammates and coaches treat me like a leader in part because I am naturally outgoing, I am always one of the top skilled players on my teams and because they can trust me to be the same player under pressure. I have watched teammates face difficult venues and game situations with tantrums or with determination. I’ve rarely seen anger improve performance and when a top player shuts down other players are left scrambling to pick them up. I’m not that player who loses his cool; I’m the player who brings teammates back to level when they get upset. I help them shake it off and focus on the next play. We win and lose together and with class.
Being a student-athlete is very important to me and a major time commitment. I’ve learned to manage my time, focusing on what’s important: making the most of my time as a student and as an athlete. In terms of college recruitment, academics are important to me as both my parents have graduate degrees. The ideal situation is that basketball takes me to a college where I can play at a high level while getting a top flight education. Playing college basketball would be a dream come true, and I will do whatever is necessary my team successful.
