My name is Logan Kahiapo Jamison Rickard. I’m a student graduating with the class of 2022. My career in basketball didn’t begin until the 8th grade, though it has been a passion that I’ve relentlessly pursued in all the years since.
Basketball is something that I enjoy playing because it takes my creativity to another level and allows me to express myself in a number of ways. I found it amazing what someone can potentially do with the ball on the court. I’ve seen players take ball-handling and teamwork to the next level which is what drew me to basketball. In addition to that, there are so many ways you can contribute to a team as a leader, role player, and starter. My goal became “help my team win by giving them open shots or looks”. I try to model aspects of my game after Jason Williams and Stephen Curry. They are both amazing point guards that can create plays for their team; they make everyone around them better. With all of the things that I have learned over the years, I see myself playing college basketball and applying all of the things, and learning many new concepts and techniques as well.
School has always been a top priority to me and my family. My goals academically are to continue studying and pursue Computer Science as a focus in college. While obviously useful in most careers, I find computer science interesting and challenging on so many levels. During my freshman year, I took the opportunity to take a college course, ICS101, which focused on coding and making websites and I was amazed at what you could do with programming in general. Then I took ICS110, which focused on programming animations with characters, during my Sophomore year and we started to get into coding and programming games and I eventually got to make a pretty simple video game. I did some research into colleges that have a computer science program or computer programming courses. I would love the opportunity to go to a college that has my field of study that I want to focus on. In college, I would like to focus on the programming part of computer science which hopefully leads to a career in developing, designing, and programming video games.
I believe that my experiences in basketball and at Kamehameha Schools Maui have prepared me for my next step into college. All of the things that I have learned in athletics, academics, along with character building will play a major role in taking that next step both mentally and physically. Academically, with the goal of continuing to study Computer Science, I plan to make this my major and focus of study. Overall, with all of my basketball accomplishments and with all the academic goals that I have set for myself, I am determined to become a self-motivated student-athlete at the next level.
