A day before the final tournament of my freshmen season, I was called to the Varsity team to be a backup guard. Excited for the opportunity I had been working towards all season, I arrived prepared, well before the other players. I was the loudest and most active player on the bench, even amongst the opposing team. I didn’t get the playing time I wanted but that didn’t mar my exhilaration of being a part of the team. More importantly, I was excited and pleased that my coach recognized the value of having me on the team, even without playing time. This experience encapsulates a lesson I try to embody every day: Show, don’t tell. Rather than complaining to the coaches that I deserved a spot on the Varsity team, I chose to make every moment count.
I know that I am not a five-star recruit. However, if given the opportunity, I will bring the same enthusiasm and dedication to every practice and game. I have dreamt of competing with the best at the collegiate level, both on the court and in the classroom. The afternoons spent at practice, then returning home to immerse myself in my studies have never felt like work. I chose to spend countless hours on the court improving my skills as an athlete and student because I knew this would allow me to realize my goals of competing at the collegiate level. This has been consistent throughout my high school years and evident from my performance on the court and in the classroom. I wish to continue my passions and challenge myself for the next four years.
