Growing up with a competitive and much bigger brother has paid off particularly in basketball. While I was younger, I was able to play on traveling teams with him. All of those experiences have helped shape the athlete and person I am today. Walking in his shadow made me realize that I wanted basketball more than ever.
I have had a basketball in my hand since pre-school. I played soccer, was a pitcher and catcher in baseball, quarterback in football, ran and jumped in track, but my ultimate passion was basketball. One of the most empowering experiences was helping a friend who had no idea how to play basketball. I love to teach anyone who is willing to learn. I taught my elementary school friend how to shoot a basketball so he could play with us in the mornings before we started our school day.
The greatest obstacle I had to overcome was when I started varsity the second half of my freshman year. After a number of games, I developed a heart rhythm abnormality. This was right at the time we were heading to districts. My doctor said I could not play until a cardiologist evaluated me. They were stumped. It took nearly a year for them to discover what was wrong. It was a condition that the doctors told me I could overcome through medication, rest, proper diet and exercise, and I could possibly outgrow it. I am excited to say that I have made a full recovery. While the starters were being announced, it was one of the toughest moments of my basketball career, sitting and watching.
My goals in life are to continue to help others. I would love to coach at the college level. I feel I have the personality to work well with athletes. I strive to be an excellent student and productive citizen in society. I not only set goals for myself, but goals for my team. I feel I am the ultimate team player. I recognize my strengths and weaknesses, but continue to improve. I am always willing to help my teammates. I spend countless hours in the gym practicing drills, shooting, and just having fun.
One of my most memorable basketball experiences was when I broke the 3-point shooting record. I am very fortunate and grateful that I have played basketball with a core group of kids since elementary. All of my teammates know and understand my passion for basketball. They know my hopes and dreams, and they are always willing to help me reach my goals. I have had the opportunity to play with very unselfish teammates. A childhood friend and teammate since elementary, got the assist on my 3-point record breaking shot. My brother set a screen so I could get the shot off. These are just a few reasons why I feel I am more than capable of playing college level basketball.
