Everybody has a goal in life. I want to have a chance to achieve my goals. I'm an African American man whose history came a long way. Martin Luther King and others fought for us to achieve and to make things happen. I’m not saying I’m perfect, I'm an average kid that has lived in an average neighborhood all my life. My parents are supporting and pushing to see me achieve greatness. I want to make myself and my family proud.
On April 16, 2010, one of my closest influences in my life passed away. I loved my grandfather, Thomas H. Washington, Sr. My grandfather would always give me advice and push me as a kid to succeed. His love showed me how gifted I am. It seemed when my grandfather passed, my family wasn't really that close anymore. I’m trying to bring that spirit back by making myself better by getting a good college education. Most of my family lives in North Carolina and South Carolina. In the older generation of my family, they did not go to college. There are people who have said, I'm not worthy or I'm not going to make it. I’m determine to aim higher in life and become a successful young man.
My favorite hobby is basketball. I started playing basketball when I was four years old. Basketball calms me down when I have a lot on my mind. I have the potential to be great, but I have to believe in myself. When I drive through Jersey City, New Jersey, there are so many African Americans that gave up and just want to shang out on the street corner. It’s make me sad that a town can be divided. This is my chance to show the world that’s not the direction I want to go in. This is my opportunity to get a college degree and start a career to help out my family someday.
I want to be a successful influence for my children one day and show them that I haven’t given up. I want to give my children the best advice possible. In my sophomore and junior year of high school, I made some mistakes that I wish I can change. I know I’m a bright individual and I know I can work harder with my grades. I'm always thinking how I can improve myself in life. I’m thinking about staying on campus for college. I want to experience college on my own and show my parents that I’m on my way to success. I’m serious about college because it’s going to perfect my future. It’s time to take manhood to a whole different level.
My goal is to major in Computer Science and specialize in Information Technology. All my life, I have always enjoyed technology. I have always been curious about how technology works. I was into all the gadgets of the 2000s. It just showed how unique, I was with computers. College will only enhance my character as a person. I love making new friends and giving back to my community. This is my opportunity to make this happen. Being a student-athlete has so many goals and risks. I’m trying to become financially stable in my lifetime. The only way to do that is to get my education and keep growing as an individual. I just need to be in a good environment to show how much I want to take college seriously. Everybody is counting on me to do good. I need this chance, its my only shot to greatness.
