Dear Coaches,
My name is Luke Rubino and I'm a Junior at Wayne Valley High School graduating in 2025. I'm a two-sport athlete with a focus on basketball. I've been fortunate in playing and contributing on some great teams during my early career in sports.
My travel team from 6th to 8th grade won 120 games with less than 25 losses and multiple tournament wins. In high school, our Freshman basketball team went 20-1 with 19 straight wins to close out the season. As a Sophomore, I played Varsity with 5 seniors and 6 juniors earning a letter with a team that won our league and went to the Passaic county final, losing to eventual Group 4 state champion Paterson Eastside. I also played Junior Varsity, sometimes playing a couple of quarters, where we had a record of 22-2 winning the JV county final. I scored 28 points in 3 quarters with 21 points in the first half. Our second JV county tournanment championship in our school's history. As a Junior, I played with 7 Seniors winning our first County Championship in our school’s 54 year history beating Paterson Eastside. We also went undefeated (10-0) winning our League. I was honored to receive 2nd Team, All League and Honorable Mention, All County.
I had success my Freshman year scoring ~15 points per game with ~8 rebounds. On the JV level, I scored ~20 point plus per game in the games where I played 3 quarters. My Junior year, I scored 7 points per game with 4 rebounds per game. I’m looking forward to my Senior year where I’ll be expected to lead a younger team.
I've been lucky to be gifted with a height at 6'4" and jumping ability (currently a 30"+ vertical jump) which I utilize in my game. I currently play small forward but have played Power Forward at the Varsity level as well. My coaches would say that my best skill is scoring and rebounding. I've worked hard on my 3-point shot, mid-range jumper, driving to the basket and running the floor on the fast break. I'm hoping to transition my skills and leadership to the college level so I can continue my first love - basketball! I'm very much looking forward to contributing on the Varsity level for the next two years.
Just as a note, I'm also a football player where I play Wide Receiver and Outside Linebacker. I played on the Wayne Valley football team which went undefeated two years ago. I contributed and started on my Freshman and JV teams where I scored 10 receiving TDs in two seasons. I lettered in football as a Junior. My highlight was scoring game winning TDs, with under 2 minutes left, in back-to-back games, against our rivals, Wayne Hills and Passaic Valley.
