Personal Statement

Hello,

I'm Bryan DeGraw Jr. Clearly, I have a passion for golf.  I have been playing since I was six years old. But, I also have a passion for life and for all the great activities you can do outside.  I am an avid fisherman and hunter, and I enjoy camping and learning about survival techniques.  My collegiate goals and aspirations involve advancing my golf skills and pursuing a degree that will allow me to continue to join the outdoors as I enter the adult world.

I am a good candidate because I am an excellent teammate. All of my friends would want me on their team if they were stranded on an island.  The main reason for that is that I am kind and caring. I listen to others and make sure that everyone feels supported and valued. Also, I could be the island entertainment when spirits are low. I like to play music on the drums and the guitar, two surefire ways to lift others' spirits. If we decided to play golf on the island, my friends know I can hit a golf ball 300 yards down the middle of a fairway.  We could tie a message to the ball and hit that passing boat to get rescued.

With the support of my parents (to help complete the licensing paperwork), I started my own wholesale bait business when I was 8 years old.  I would catch sand fleas (mole crabs) on the beach for myself to use as bait for surf fishing.  I can always spot where they are on the beach.  While in the local tackle shop where my Dad and I always get our fishing gear, we asked the owner if I could sell him packaged sand fleas.  He said sure.  It took some trial and error to get the process down so my sand fleas looked like they were freshly caught.  My sand fleas are the best sellers on 30A from Grayton Beach to Rosemary Beach.

I mentioned I can hit a golf ball.  For as long as I've been fishing, I've also been playing golf and taking lessons with a swing coach.  Those lessons are beginning to reflect in my performance on the course.  My game continues to improve and I know I can compete at the collegiate level.  Of course, equally important is my education.  I am looking for schools with a great Marine Biology program.   My dream is to obtain a golf scholarship at a school where I will also obtain a solid education that puts me in a position to succeed in life on or off the golf course.

Thanks for taking the time to learn a little more about me.  I look forward to learning how your school's academic and golf programs can help me reach my goals.
