I believe in hard work and that nothing comes easy. For example, at tryouts you’re not just going to make the team, you have to actually work for what you want and that’s not just in hockey that’s in everything. I didn’t make the B team my first year and it made me work hard all year and work even harder at the next evaluation. I have been on a B team every year since I didn’t make it because I know I have to work harder than most players to make it. The first time I stepped on the ice I was seven and I wasn’t very good but that didn’t stop me. I’m not the biggest skater out there and that still doesn’t stop me. That doesn’t stop me because I’m not scared of the bigger kids and I don’t let them intimidate me. I also believe in honesty. Once, I stepped on my father’s two hundred-dollar sunglasses and when he found out he was upset that they were broken. He didn’t know how they were broken but you could see that he was upset. I was 11 and found it very hard to tell him the truth. When I finally told him he laughed and said that it couldn’t have been easy for me to come out with the truth but it’s one of his proudest memories of me because of how hard it was to tell the truth.
I love being outdoors and living in Alaska. Some of my hobbies are fishing, hunting, snow machining, four wheeling, and camping. Every summer I go fishing for Rainbow trout and Pike. Alaska gives me the opportunity to Ice fish, skate outside, play soccer all summer, and take our canoe or small boat out with my younger sisters to fish. I also play competitive soccer during the summer. I play every position except goalie. I like soccer because it is fun to see my team work together and I like to pass and get people goals who never really score a lot. Once I helped another player get a hat trick after he told me he never made a goal before.
During the winter I skate on a pond next to our house. My neighbors have grandkids and we skate together all the time. Two of my sisters play hockey, I have 2 cousins that play hockey, and a few of my friends have outdoor rinks so we all like to get together and play hockey as much as we can. I would describe myself more as a playmaker than a scorer. I can see the ice very well and find the open man. I want to be a power forward when I grow up. I am a late bloomer so I want to play junior hockey before college allowing myself more time to mature and develop my skills before losing eligibility. My father is 6’2” and was 230 lbs and says he was smaller than me at my age now. I’m hoping I will be at least 6’3” one day and sprout in high school like he did.
Overall, I’m an athlete. I’ve played football and I did gymnastics for a few years as well. While attending my sister’s gymnastics sessions my mom would ask if I was interested to which I generally replied “No thanks”. One day, I saw a gymnast there who was really strong and decided that I should give it a try to help build my muscles too. In football, I played wide receiver. I’m very fast and am usually one of the fastest kids on every team I have ever been on. I had to quit football because of the time constraints it had on school and hockey as the seasons overlap in Alaska. I wish I could still play football. Now that I am in high school I hope to play in the 2017-2018 season as the time constraint will not be so burdensome when getting out of school earlier.
One of my hero’s is Evgeni Malkin for the Pittsburgh Penguins because I am just like him. He is my favorite player to watch because he’s an emotional player like me. He takes control of the game and turns into an unstoppable force when he sets his mind to it which is exactly how I play at times.
I look forward to playing hockey wherever I get an opportunity to help achieve my college goals.
