Personal Statement
As a young boy growing up in rural southern Indiana, it’s not often you hear the word hockey, skates, or ice … But, I quickly fell in love with hockey when I was 4 years old while attending an NHL game when on vacation with my family. I begged my parents to take me to the local rink and as soon as my feet hit the ice I’ve always wanted more. More ice time but that was hard to come by in southern Indiana. My father helped satisfy my passion to skate by building an outdoor rink from grain bin rings and concrete and this is where I now spend most of my days. I was given the opportunity to pursue my dream of playing hockey at our local rink starting with house league and quickly moving up to play at higher levels. This year I am starting my 8th year playing Tier 1 AAA hockey as the team assistant captain for the Tri-State Spartans.
In the last 8 years I have become an elite athlete with a very high compete level, always holding myself and teammates to a high standard. Whether it's a game, practice, or training session, I am always competing with the given situation and challenging myself every step of the way. I am a fierce competitor, tremendous skater, good shot from the point and defend well one on one. As Coach Brent Gwidt stated, “Eli is my captain and at the top of the list for his athletic capabilities, leadership, teamwork, work ethic and character.” As an elite athlete, I hold these as critical characteristics for any successful hockey player.
Over the years, I have learned from many great coaches and teammates and I continue to constantly strive to sharpen my skills as both a hockey player and young man. God has given me a true talent with a heart of passion, and I am working tirelessly each day to fulfill my passion to one day play in the NHL so that maybe I can inspire the next 4 year old watching a game with his family on vacation.
