Personal Statement
My name is Will Wright, and I am from Princeton, New Jersey. I have been playing hockey since I was four years old, starting out on the lake near my house. I have always prided myself on my intelligent play, using my speed and grit to make plays. I am never unwilling to block a shot, drive to the opposing net with or without the puck, or clear the front of my own net. I am a quieter player, but my teammates always respect me because of the respect I show them, and my hard work. I am great on the penalty kill, and play a bottom six center role very well on good teams. I am often relied upon to step up in big situations, and I consider myself a clutch player. I love being under pressure, it gives me extra motivation to step up. If I get the opportunity to play in college I hope to embrace my natural leadership, and hard working qualities to earn a leadership role.
The selfless qualities hockey has provided me with have helped me in my service work. I have been to Peru and Costa Rica in the past two years. In Peru, I taught English, Math, Art, and PE at a small private school for two weeks. I trained at high altitude, running once a day and then playing basketball or soccer in the evening. After the two weeks of training and teaching, I trekked through the Andes in Peru for three days, and walking all the way to Machu Picchu. This past year, I went to Costa Rica. I stayed with a host family, and played soccer with the locals, and helped take care of the field. I then went to the coast and surfed with the locals for a week. During the second week I helped build a kitchen for a local family. These two experiences helped me grow significantly, and were both great life experiences.
I hope to become involved in the world of sports in some way. I would love to be a hockey coach, journalist, news anchor, or agent. I love sports, and I want to be able to give back to the sports world in some way, especially hockey. I hope that I can use my experiences in hockey and on community service trips to help my succeed in achieving my goals in life.
