Joining the rowing team at my high school was not something I expect at the beginning of my Freshman year. I had originally planned to play soccer, before my dad recommended me to try out rowing after hearing about the team from a friend of his. After reluctantly giving the sport a chance, I fell in love. From the water to the erging to showing up at the early morning practices, I was enthralled by the hustle that the sport demanded from its athletes. I always revered the grinding, the hard work, that I would see amazing athletes do in preparation for their sports, and being able to train just as hard as them was something that motivated me to get out of bed and to work hard. It all culminated at the end of the spring season, with my freshman 8 having a dominant display at the SRAA National Championships, securing 1st place comfortably, following our second place at the Stotesbury Regatta, the largest high school regatta in the world. I am now a member of my Varsity team’s 1V and am striving to win more and improve my skills, so I can experience victory like that again.
