I am an IB student at Lincoln High School and a student athlete. I've been part of a junior varsity rowing team for 5 years and it has inexplicably shaped the person I am today, a committed student and a team captain. Rowing is a team endeavor and as such it teaches you a great deal about communication, collaboration, team building and leadership. In a quad (the boat I most often row) a small team practices and competes together 6 days a week, 700 hours a year, experiencing occasional successes and frequent failures, applying learnings, modifying the approach and trying harder. We've competed in national and international competitions and it's taught me a lot about team work, humility and perseverance. Rowing is also an individual sport, where you must push your body daily beyond its limits, training harder than you think possible in order not to disappoint your team. The mental endurance aspect of the sport, with its rigorous training schedule, highly competitive regattas and a balancing act of pairing a daily training regimen with a full school schedule has prepared me for any challenge in a professional environment. I show up, work hard and get results. I love being part of a team and thrive in a teamwork learning environment.
I am not the most naturally gifted athlete, just a tall lightweight who loves to row and loves being part of a team, but I work hard to overcome those handicaps. There's a lot beyond the stats and transcript that defines me and that’s my perseverance, team player attitude and commitment to learning. I've had to work twice as hard as others on the team to make it to Nationals and keep my grades up in academically rigorous IB classes. My commitment to schoolwork includes nights and weekends studying and working on research papers. I am methodical, measured and persistent, I listen and want to learn from those around me, modifying my approach to achieve the best results.
Beyond school and sport I am also passionate about working with youth and helping others. I’m a team captain on my rowing team and I’ve been coaching younger athletes for the past few summers as part of our learn to row program, working closely with students and helping them grow. That passion for teaching and coaching has translated into the classroom, where I participated in a Portland Public Schools organized internship teaching in a 2nd grade classroom at Chapman elementary and am now signed up to do another teaching internship in 2022 in addition to my IB diploma.
