Personal Statement

My name is Abram Burton, a 15-year-old student-athlete from New Market, Alabama, and I’m passionate about soccer and personal growth. I attend Valley Fellowship Christian Academy, where I’ve developed discipline, leadership, and a strong academic foundation.

Growing up in a military family taught me resilience, respect, and the value of hard work—qualities I bring to every training session and match. I’m a team-first player who thrives under pressure, stays coachable, and pushes myself to improve daily.

I aspire to play collegiate soccer while pursuing a degree that challenges me intellectually. What sets me apart is my character: shaped by service, strengthened by adversity, and driven by purpose. I’m ready to contribute to a program that values grit, growth, and heart.

Training

  • Intermediate
  • 3 years
  • The Intermediate Phase will build upon the skills that Abram has acquired in the Beginner Phase and will introduce concepts related to speed, agility, and coordination. Throughout this phase, students will achieve proficiency in a minimum of 4-5 techniques that they will master independently. By integrating skill development with speed and agility training, students will perform at a faster pace and learn to manage their speed effectively to prompt defenders to commit.
  • Beginner
  • 1 year
  • The Beginner Phase consists of an introductory focus on skill development, highlighting the importance of proper technique, body positioning, and ball control. Abram successfully acquired fundamental skills by utilizing various parts of his foot and executing touches on the ball to outmaneuver a defender in one-on-one scenarios.
  • Advanced
  • 2 years
  • Abram is currently engaged in the Advanced Phase of his training, a critical stage that emphasizes the execution of a diverse array of combinations. During this phase, the tempo of play has significantly increased, necessitating a greater focus on the nuances of the initial touch and body language. These elements are crucial, as they can greatly influence how defenders respond during gameplay. A well-executed first touch can create space and opportunities, while confident body language can intimidate or mislead opponents, thereby affecting their defensive strategies. To enhance these skills, training sessions are now meticulously structured around small-sided games. This format allows participants to engage in dynamic 2v2 and 3v3 situations, which are particularly effective for honing individual skills and fostering teamwork. In these smaller matchups, players like Abram can practice their decision-making under pressure, improve their ability to read the game, and refine their technical skills in a more intimate setting. The close quarters of small-sided games encourage quick thinking and adaptability, as players must constantly adjust to the movements of their teammates and opponents.
  • Elite
  • 1 year
  • The Elite Phase focuses on fine tuning the development of the individual player. We now combine skillwork, speed, agility, coordination, and gameplay, while applying these at full pace in an increasingly competitive environment. The use of peripheral vision, awareness of surroundings and exploiting situations to create opportunities for themselves and their teammates are mastered in this phase.
