My name is Mason Day, and I am 5”8” 140 lb, left forward for Legend High School. I am in my senior year of high school and have been playing soccer since I was 5 years old. I got interested in the sport because my mom played the sport when she was young and she wanted me to try it out. In the 5th grade I began playing on a competitive team. This team stayed together until after the spring season of 8th grade when we all moved onto high school. Beginning with my competitive team my enjoyment of the sport escalated as I learned more advance skills and scored goals more and more often. I have tried other sports like flag football, basketball and baseball. I liked playing flag football but not as much soccer because I didn’t find it as fun and exhilarating but I was very competitive at it. Basketball I only played at the rec level and never really enjoyed it and was never good at it either. Baseball I just never got into as it was boring and not fun at all. In the spring of Freshman year, I ran track and was very fast with the 4x100 and 100 meter dash. I plan on continuing track this spring. For high school soccer this past season, my coach had us read Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath. Although reading a book and taking a test was homework for soccer, the book did help me define my top five strengths and they were right on. My top five strengths are Competitor, Maximizer, Deliberative, Includer, and Harmony. A Competitor is somebody who loves to win and doesn’t play just to have fun, which I love to do. I don’t like to lose but love to win. A maximizer is somebody who wants to go above and beyond the expectation. It resembles me because I love to go above the expectation in soccer. If my coach wants a goal for me then I will go for two. One game my sophomore season I scored four goals! A Deliberative is somebody who is quiet but will talk when comfortable. This is a strength of mine because I am no leader, but I love to talk to my friends and will speak if comfortable. A Includer is another one of my strengths because, I love to include everybody. If a teammate is not understanding something I will help them. Harmony is my last strength because I don’t like being in debates, conflicts, and arguments. I will usually try to avoid one, unless it is with my sister. This relates to me in soccer because I won’t try to start fights or finish. At the soccer season banquet one team member is given the Titan Award. This award winner is voted on by the team and the coach for the player that is not the MVP, but had MVP qualities as well as viewed as a leader, a motivated and a good all around player and teammate. I am proud to say that I won this award!
