My name is Callum Sherry and I attend Ramsey Grammar School in the Isle of Man, home of the World Famous TT Races and Manx Cats. I'm due to start my final year of 'A' Levels in Economics, History and Sport in 2020/21. Playing soccer in the US for the IOM Schools U19 Team in Tournaments in California really sparked my interest in attend University in the US whilst playing competitive soccer.
I'm a technical player with good ball skills, speed and controlled aggression coupled with game intelligence meaning I'm more in the mold of a modern Centreback / Defensive Central Midfield. Being Captain of my U16 team (2017/2018) had meant I had to take a leadership role not only in encouraging others but leading by example in terms of effort and commitment to training and doing additional session in my own time to improve. Whilst I'm not currently captain of the Mens team I play for I do still lead by example and encourage the players in the team even though most are older than myself.
I come from a sporting family and participated in several sports (Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Hockey, Cricket, Table Tennis, Skiing, Mountain Biking and Athletics) from an early age before focus on Soccer and Athletics from Year 9. I'm proud of my achievement of reaching the National Schools Athletics finals for Long Jump (2017) and being invited to trial for 2 English Football League Clubs for a scholarship (2018/19) both showed that plenty of hard work has to accompany talent to reach your goals something I was happy to undertake.
Whilst I wasn't successful in attaining a scholarship with either Wigan FC or Morecambe FC, the experience and opportunity has focused my mind on wanting to challenge myself again in the USA for Academic and sporting opportunities.
My ability and hard work lead to my selection at 16 for the IOM 'Centre of Excellent' U18 Team as well as the IOM Schools U19 Team that visited the USA in July 2019 and playing in 2 tournaments. I was again selected for the IOM 'Centre of Excellent' U18 Team reaching the quarter finals of the FA County Cup and was also selected for the IOM Schools U19 Team for 2020 but the Covid Pandemic meant that opportunity didn't materialise. I have kept in touch with the host families from the US during 2019/20 especially with the Wild Fires in Califonia and the Pandemic and look forward to being selected for the 2021 trip.
