I'm Gavin Meng, and I am passionate about a career in soccer. I’ve been chasing after soccer balls since I was 4 - that's a whole decade now! It started off as just fun in the park, but somewhere along the line, it turned into something way bigger. Now, as a 14-year-old freshman, I’m on the varsity field, making my team proud and having a blast playing the game I love at a level I used to dream about.
Thinking back to little four-year-old me just kicking the ball around, I never thought I’d be where I am today. I always had a natural ability with soccer, but I have not always been great. However, I set a goal a long time ago to be great, I kept at it, joined the right teams, listened to my coaches, and play every chance I get. Fast forward ten years, I am starting as a forward on my club team and playing varsity soccer for my high school as a freshman. It feels awesome to look back on hard work and see what I have been able to accomplish.
One thing I’ve learned from all these years of playing is how to “read” the game. It’s like I can see things before they happen, which helps big time when you’re up front trying to score or set up a buddy to hit the back of the net. I am also naturally pretty fast but I have worked hard, training most days and developed great speed in my position which is a huge advantage on the field.
Soccer isn’t all about one person; it’s a team game! I do my best to keep our spirits high and get everyone working together, especially when things get tough in a match. Whether we win or lose, I believe we do it as a team.
What’s next for me? I’ve got my eyes set on playing college soccer. I know it’s going to be a whole new ball game there, but I’m ready for it. Classes, training, new teammates... bring it on! If I keep pushing my limits, one day I can see myself playing professionally.
