Personal Statement

Academics and soccer have always been the driving factors behind my successes. My earliest memory is of me with a soccer ball and trying to learn all I could about the game that fueled my fire.  When I think of soccer, I picture family and connecting with others.  Not only was “The Beautiful Game” the basis for so many of my school essays and projects throughout my life, it was also what taught me lessons on grit and how hard work pays off. It is extremely important to me that I translate that hard work on the field and in the classroom.

Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of attending three National level tournaments where I watched how adversity builds character. I learned that no matter how tough things may get, being part of a team is the greatest feeling. Nothing compares to the support and guidance that I have received from playing soccer under dedicated managers, qualified coaches, and alongside many talented players. Attending the Dallas Cup 2019 was a great honor, and leading my team in goals all the way to the U18 semifinals was a dream. However, that was not the only positive that came out of that competition. Despite missing classes for several days in order to attend the prestigious event, I was able to work extra hard and maintain my 3.8 GPA. Being an exemplary student is just as important to me as being a successful soccer player. I will continue to take AP courses next year to continue challenging myself.  Due to my strong work ethic, I will pursue my interest in Business and Finance.

I have been blessed with the support of family and friends and I am grateful that I have not run into many obstacles in regards to soccer.  I have played with and for amazing players and coaches. I look forward to continued growth both on and off the field. Two experiences that have greatly changed me are working with our town’s special needs soccer program and being a Captain as a Junior for my high school Varsity soccer team. Giving others who have serious obstacles to overcome the chance to play and enjoy the sport I love so much brings me such pleasure. I am grateful that I have been afforded this opportunity. Also, being captain of the Varsity soccer team for the last 2 years has shown me how important it is to be an effective communicator and a resource for those who need assistance, as well as many important leadership skills that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

As a small child I would play soccer for hours and my grandfather would say “why do you use your right foot only?” He would have me practice using both feet. While I can use both my right and left foot, I have been a preferred lefty for all of my competitive soccer playing thanks to him. I look forward to challenging myself and growing as a student and player every day from here on out.
