Personal Statement
Hello! My name is Joseph Meyer. I am 6’+ and weigh 165-lbs. I am from Wilmington, Delaware, but I am currently starting my senior year and play Varsity Soccer at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey. The decision to leave home at 14 to pursue my dream on the pitch did not come without sacrifice. I had to leave my family & friends, as well as the teams I played with including Kirkwood, Spirit United and the Philadelphia Union Juniors Select program. I had to learn to live with 50+ other students from all over the world, communicate with different languages, manage my time wisely, and to stay motivated and focused toward my goal without my parent’s and brothers’ assistance. It has made me more mature and independent.
I currently play Attacking Midfielder (center or outside), but have played other positions, including Right Back, Winger and Center Forward. The St. Benedict’s Soccer Program has joined forces with Cedar Stars Academy where we have the opportunity to play year round as a team in a residency program. Due to this merger, I made the difficult decision to leave PDA where we had won the 2013 Pre-Academy National Championship and the 2014 New Jersey State Title. This move will enable my high school team to train together year round right on campus. Our St. Benedict’s Varsity Team won the 2014 National Championship and I am looking forward to the 2015 season and having the opportunity to be the #1 High School Soccer Team again. We will be shooting for our 10th star in St. Benedict’s history.
As a soccer player, I am told that I am very coachable and believe that is because I am a student of the game. I watch every game possible, help coach the younger boys and constantly training with collegiate and professional players who stay in shape with us during the off-season. Some of my best attributes are: I have great vision to make the right pass or run, I am very technical with the ball and maintain possession, and I always work until the whistle is blown. I love winning!!! My teams have won the Delaware State Championship, New Jersey State Championship, Pre-Academy National Championship & High School National Championship! Some of my coaches’ comments include: “Joey is our spark”, “Joey just keeps pinging the ball around and creating great opportunities” & “Joey is the glue of our team”. I try to always motivate my teammates during games when our team is not playing to our potential. Positive play is everything to me!
Academically, I am just as hard working in the classroom as I am on the soccer field. I have maintained Highest Honors every semester. In addition to maintaining my grades, I also assist my teammates who struggle with schoolwork, tutoring them on weekends and during study hall in the dormitory.
I have successfully dedicated myself to this dream of playing at the highest level for my club, my high school and next for my college. I look forward to the next big step in my career.
Thank you for your consideration!
