John's Personal Statement for Soccer Recruitment
My highest level of play was at in Winter 2017, playing for the Oregon Timbers Olympic Development Team (ODP), in the Western Regional Championship Tournament and, winning that, in the ODP National Championship Tournament. In the Regionals, my playing time increased after the first game to play most of the next four games, including the semi-final and final. I believe, as supported by post-tournament evaluations from opposing coaches as well as my coach, that I significantly helped the Timbers ODP Team win their first-ever Region 4 Championship, making the first goal in the semi-final against a yet unscored-against Nevada, and maintaining control of the ball in the final, winning against the favorite, Southern California. I was named to the "All Tournament Team," the 18 best players of the 180 who competed as 2000 boys in that tournament. Since then, I placed in the ODP Region 4 (Western) pool, after being invited to be evaluated at their summer soccer camp, and I’ve been invited to play for the 2017 US Youth Soccer Winter Interregional Event to determine the best Regional Team in the U.S.
I began playing soccer in 2007 as a defender in a recreational soccer league in Sacramento for the Tornados, then for the Revolution, mostly playing center-back. When I decided try out for a competitive league in 2013, I was immediately pegged as a forward, which I've played since. While playing for Rush in Hawaii for two years, I was making about half the team's goals as we moved up to the second ranked team on Oahu. Moving to Crescent Valley High in Corvallis Oregon in 2015, I made varsity as a sophomore. Off-season, I play for the Corvallis Soccer Club in Oregon, which, coming from a small pool of players, includes three different age groups. I helped CSC move from 16th place last year to 2nd place in Oregon this year. Playing against the best Club Teams in Oregon, we made to the finals in the Oregon State Cup in April, the Clash at the Border on June 24, and the Adidas Beaverton Cup on July 15. In this last tournament, I made 4 out of our 6 goals along with 1 assist. My best soccer moments were: (1) in the semi-final against HSC 99B Newberg, when I left-footed a ball from 25 yards out past the goalie into the upper corner of the net, (2) setting up the first goal in the game against Santos FC 99B Cruzerio by stealing a ball on the 50, running it to the goal line, then megging a defender to place the ball in front of a teammate for a goal from 10 yards out, and (3) scoring the goals that brought us from behind to win two games in the last Competitive Team Tournament.
My objective is to continue playing soccer at a 4-year college immediately after graduating from High School . It's possible I'll be chosen to play in the 2000 Olympics, an opportunity I wouldn't want to turn down, though it may require some time off school. While playing soccer in college, I'd like to pursue a degree in Engineering or a related field.
If you’d like to see me play, I will be playing on the Crescent Valley High School Varsity Soccer Team in late September through October, and for a U.S. Championship at the ODP Winter Interregional December 1-3 in Tampa, Florida.
