I started kicking the ball with my dad when I was three. I grew up watching clips of Lothar Matthäus, Johan Cruyff, Pelé, Arjen Robben, and Messi, to name a few. I loved watching Matthäus in particular. His level of intensity field-wide, his focus and boldness, his all-around skill. I wanted to model my game after his.
My dad played soccer, and early on he stressed that if I wanted to play the game the right way, I should honor it by playing with grit, creativity, vision, and passion. I should put in the hours, but in a smart way. He also stressed that I should have balance in life. So as a result, early on, I also swam, played basketball, learned the piano, hiked, and read a lot.
I play soccer because I love the freedom I feel when I play. It allows me to be myself in ways impossible anywhere else. I hate to lose, but I also want to honor the game and support my teammates. Like Matthäus, I don’t take the game for granted. I always work hard — in soccer, in school, and at the gym. I hope to go to a college with good academics and a good soccer program, and continue to strive to be the best in both pursuits.
